Megan Rickard – Harp
Megan’s musical education began at the age of seven with the Junior Strings Project at the Royal Northern College of Music. She went on to become a chorister at Manchester Cathedral, and studying harp at Chetham’s School of Music with Jean Bell, Principal Harp at the Halle under Barbirolli and piano with Jonathan Middleton. Megan was regularly involved in broadcasts on radio and television with the Cathedral choir. She was vocal soloist in the world premiere of ‘Sails in St Magnus ll’ by Peter Maxwell Davies with the BBC Philharmonic conducted by the composer. Megan has performed extensively with orchestras and choirs at numerous venues including the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, Canterbury Cathedral, St Paul’s Cathedral, Tewkesbury Abbey, Bath Abbey, the Royal Academy of Music, and the Royal College of Music under conductors such as Yan Pascal Tortellier, Jac Van Steen and Mark Elder. Also a chamber musician, she has collaborated with violinists, flautists and cellists, as well as bigger ensembles, including working with several amateur choirs.
Whilst studying German and Russian at Bristol University, she was heavily involved in the musical life of the university, holding the position of principal harp in the Symphony Orchestra, and harpist in the New Music Ensemble, tackling repertoire such as Takemitsu and new commissions. As part of her university language course, she spent six months at the St. Petersburg Conservatoire studying harp. After graduating, she achieved distinction in her Performance Diploma (DipABRSM).
Megan recently moved to Plymouth from Helensburgh, near Glasgow. Whilst in Helensburgh, she performed the Mozart Flute and Harp Concerto and the Ravel Introduction and Allegro with a local chamber group and orchestra. She has also performed the Handel Harp Concerto and Debussy’s Danses Sacrees et Danses Profanes. She has given several solo lunchtime recitals, as well as appearing with many orchestras around the country. Megan also sings to a high standard and is a regular member of the Birmingham-based choir Ex Cathedra, and the Buckfast Abbey Choir. Megan has a young family and when time allows, she enjoys reading, walking, cycling and going to the theatre.
